Apps moved to IBM mainframes

Micro Focus on Tuesday will roll out a version of its Server Express development environment to enable migration of Cobol applications to IBM’s eServerzSeries Linux mainframe.

The product, Micro Focus Server Express for zSeries, is available now. Developers can build, test, and deploy application, said Irving Abraham, Micro Focus product manager for Unix Solutions. The package can assist with IBM server consolidation, enabling IT personnel to run applications on a single environment or partition hardware to feature different system images, he said.

“Because it’s the same product that [Micro Focus has] on other platforms, it gives us a seamless sort of migration path,” Abraham said.

According to Micro Focus,ABK Systeme, a German-based company that provides solutions for banking payment transactions and clearing for the Euro currency, has realized significant performance gains by moving its legacy Cobol to the IBM eServerzSeries Linux-only mainframe, via the new version of Server Express. Working with IBM and Micro Focus, ABK offers a business payment system capable of processing 50 million domestic German payment transactions or more than 500,000 SWIFT (Society of Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) messages within six hours.
