Handset maker ranks No. 2 in shipments behind Nokia Samsung Electronics is expecting to ship about 100 million mobile phones in 2005, its president said in an interview with a Korean newspaper.The company expects shipments to surpass 86 million units in 2004 and to reach about 100 million in 2005, KT Lee told the Korea Economic Daily. A Samsung spokeswoman confirmed his comments.Samsung’s mobile phone shipments have been rising fast in recent quarters. With shipments of 65.5 million units in the first nine months of this year, Samsung’s handset shipments have already surpassed the 55.6 million units that it shipped during all of 2003. Market-research company Gartner ranked it the No. 2 handset maker in terms of shipments in the third quarter of this year.Gartner estimated that Samsung sold 23 million handsets during the quarter. That pushed its market share from 11.2 percent a year earlier to 13.8 percent and placed it above Motorola, which sold 22.4 million phones, according to Gartner’s estimate. Samsung remains some distance behind market leader Nokia, which sold 51.7 million handsets in the third quarter, Gartner said.Samsung attributed its strong sales to demand for midrange and high-end phones, including the SGH-E800 in Europe. The company is hoping several new handsets, including the SGH-D500 and 3G models for Vodafone Group, will help it achieve an equally strong fourth quarter, the company said recently when it announced its third-quarter earnings.
