New IP VPN extends enterprise networks' reach

New York — MCI used the CeBIT trade show here to detail some of the pieces that will comprise its strategy for converged networks.

For starters, MCI announced an IP VPN remote access solution. The service enables customers to move between an IP-based environment using existing frame relay, ATM, private IP and IP VPN networks, according to company officials.

The VPN is powered by MCI’s Secure Internetworking Gateway (SIG), which MCI manages, monitors and updates. “This is the first phase of a multi-phase deployment. It allows our remote access networks to converge with our core network,” said Ron McMurtrie, vice president of global marketing at MCI, based in Ashburn, Va.

Phases 2 and 3, which officials said will be completed in the near future, involve building dedicated connections between various networks.

MCI said that it will boost its access strategy next month when it will make available its Remote Broadband Access service. The company partnered with Wayport to tap into the latter’s hotspots to provide Wi-Fi access in airports, hotel common areas, as well as wired connections in hotel guest rooms. Remote Broadband Access is designed to make it easier for users to log in, and find necessary phone numbers and connections. It will be available in July.

Further expanding its broadband offerings, MCI detailed a broadband satellite service that it partnered with Tachyon to offer. Satellite services will expand broadband to “the vast majority of companies that DSL doesn’t reach,” McMurtrie said.

“This is just the continuing story of adding to our broadband mix,” McMurtrie said.

The satellite service will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, officials said.
