Today in Open Source: What to expect from Ubuntu 14.04. Plus: LXLE beta updated, and SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 released What To Expect From Ubuntu 14.04 OMG! Ubuntu! has an overview of what you might expect from Ubuntu 14.04. You don’t need to look through powerful binoculars to glimpse what’s looming on the horizon for Ubuntu. In around five months’ time the terrifically named Trusty Tahr – aka ‘Ubuntu 14.04′ – will be released on the desktop and server, while newer 14.04-based versions of Ubuntu for phones and tablets will also be made public. But what can we expect to find in them? More at OMG! Ubuntu! It looks Xorg is staying, and that Canonical is putting a huge effort into mobile Ubuntu (especially for tablets). Unity 8 looks like it is off on the horizon somewhere, so don’t expect that in 14.04 either. Assuming OMG! Ubuntu! is correct, it looks like Ubuntu 14.04 might be yet another ho-hum release. Of course it’s still way too early to judge it, we’ll just have to wait for the final release before doing that. LXLE Beta Updated The LXLE distro beta has been updated according to the LXLE site. LXLE is based on Lubuntu which is an Ubuntu OS using the LXDE desktop enviroment. LXLE is desgined to be a drop in and go OS. Primarily for aging computers. It’s intention is to be able to throw it on any computer and leave. The second beta release of LXLE concentrated on squashing the bugs of the initial beta while smoothing some edges that came to light thanks to early testers feedback. More at LXLE It sounds like LXLE is humming right along, it should be interesting to see what it has to offer when it’s finally out of beta. It could be quite useful on older computers without lots of hardware resources. SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 Released The latest version of SuperTuxKart is available, according to LinOxide. SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 has been officially released. It includes many new features and contributions from many new developers. SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 comes with new combined speedometer and nitrometer, updated Beastie kart, Wiimote support and ability to filter add-ons.
