The folks at OMG Ubuntu have a list of what’s new in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS that should help get you started with it. Joey-Elijah Sneddon reports for OMG Ubuntu: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ships with a modified version of Linux 4.4 kernel. It introduces numerable improvements to system stability, performance, power efficiency, and file system handling, and introduces support for newer Intel and AMD hardware. Improved Intel Skylake processor support 3D support in the virtual GPU driver New driver for Corsair Vengeance K90 Support for TPM 2.0 chips Journaled RAID 5 support Unity is Ubuntu’s default desktop shell. A host of bug fixes for some long-standing issues feature in its latest outing. Yes, as you may have heard by now, Ubuntu 16.04 finally lets you move the Unity launcher to the bottom of the screen — six long years after users first asked. The ‘option’ to change the position is not exposed via the native system settings app, instead lurking in the nerdy nether regions of the dconf-editor. Third-party utilities like Unity Tweak Tool (available from Ubuntu Software) offer an easier, one-click toggle, however. That picture has seriously stirred something in me. It’s making me consider using Ubuntu (Unity) on my main machine now.” Bunbuntu: “It feels really good. I thought I’d have trouble getting used to it after it being on the left for such a long time, but the transition was easy. I was worried that the launcher might be too wide at first, but being able to change the size of it until it looked sharp and perfect was a great finishing touch.” SwordofPontus: “Thank you to everyone who worked on this. Ubuntu makes my life better and I’m grateful for all you’ve done.” Generalnie7: “I can’t believe they didn’t fix white corners in Calendar app! I was checking it every day lately, thinking they will fix it last minute. It’s embarassing to have such ROUGH EDGE on officially released LTS. Saying that, very decent release, I’m gonna try to stick to it for next 2 years and avoid my usual distro jumping. Although for those of you who still are on 14.04, I would wait at least month or two (or till 14.04.1) with upgrading if it works well for you. It still has some minor bugs that are not present in 14.04 (little things like bluetooth indicator disappearing from panel every time you turn it off, super annoying).” Rklabs: “Upgraded to 16.04 from 15.10 in VirtualBox. Now I’m back to Ubuntu on both my computers because Ubuntu “just works” and I actually want to get stuff done rather than try to workaround problems. Also, the PPA system, can’t live without it.” Degru: “I see they STILL haven’t fixed the disappearing copy dialog bug. If I alt-tab away from a transfer dialog, it disappears apart from the little indicator on the dock, and there’s NO WAY to bring it back.” Vorgain: “I guess I should finally upgrade from whatever I’m running on my laptop. Not gonna lie, after my work switched to Windows machines I’ve also more or less moved away from Ubuntu.
