We won't know the real news until Apple's WWDC, but rumors are still coming in about the new iPhone 3.0 upgrade

Rumors have been building for a while about a new iPhone 3.0 expected in June. The latest story is that the newest iPhone is an incremental upgrade over the existing model with new features:

  • 600MHz Samsung ARM processor (up from 400MHz)
  • 256MB of system RAM (up from 128MB)
  • 16GB or 32GB of RAM
  • 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus
  • Electronic compass
  • FM receiver

This new model may also be thinner than the existing iPhone. While this would be a decent upgrade, keeping up with technology improvements in processor speed and memory, it’s a bit of a yawner overall. But let’s see what Apple else has up its sleeves to show off in June at its worldwide developer conference.

With the Palm Pre possibly coming next week and fake rumors about a Zunephone, I think Apple will need to be more aggressive to keep its lead. Or perhaps this is really just a 2.1 release before a more significant product later on.
