Some sweet news about the next incarnation of the open-source mobile OS

As major and minor manufacturers scramble to release the next Android handset, the Open Handset Alliance — Android’s developers — haven’t been resting on their laurels. Screenshots of the next generation of Android, code-named Cupcake, have started to get passed around like, well, like a tray of cupcakes.

Android developer Aaron La, who released details of the Cupcake build in his blog, says that the next gen of Android will feature software keyboard support, the ability to pick different locales, an option to view running/third-party applications (much as Task Manager does), and some minor tweaks such as new animation effects for opening and closing windows.

It remains to be seen which options will be included in the final release. As La mentions, for example, because the phone does not auto-rotate, it’s hard to type on it using the new onscreen option. Let’s hope that by the time Cupcake gets to the users, that deficiency, among others, will have been corrected. If Android can keep up the pace, it stands to win a lot more fans.
