Dear Bob ... In regards to getting to the first rung, that is, getting into a managerial position, you may want to forward a suggestion I offer people. There are abundant opportunities to get managerial experience for a resume outside of your work. One suggestion is to lead projects for local nonprofit groups; the volunteering and leadership will be valuable to them, and it gives you real-life examples to cite.

One suggestion is to lead projects for local nonprofit groups; the volunteering and leadership will be valuable to them, and it gives you real-life examples to cite. Another way is to get into organizations that have leadership positions. In my case, I joined Toastmasters (also a marvelous way to develop those communication skills and polish), became a club president, an Area Governor, and then a Gulf Coast Division Governor, where I was responsible for about 600 people.

Dear Chuck …

Who says you get to give good advice? That’s my gig!

You’re right on target, and I’m embarrassed to have missed the chance to suggest this. Non-profits and volunteer associations in particular are often hungry for help and will be delighted to accept yours if you choose to offer it. It’s a great way to turn any form of training into resume-ready experience.

Not only that, but you’ll be helping some people who really need and appreciate it at the same time.
