Musings …

It doesn’t matter.

What doesn’t matter? What you do, that’s what, and what your company does.

This isn’t always true, of course. If you work in a hospital you’re dealing with life-and-death situations and it really does matter to the patients in a clear and unambiguous way.

For the most part, though, you’re just a player in a big game. So stop worrying so much and think about it that way.

What would happen if your employer imploded tomorrow? You and your colleagues would be out of work, which would be mighty inconvenient, I’m sure. Your company’s customers would have to find a new source of whatever they get from you, too. Which they would, meaning some other companies will get more business and expand. They won. You lost. Maybe you’ll go to work for one of them; maybe for another company in another industry. If you’re good, you’ll find work. If you aren’t good, find a different line of evil to pursue – why would you want to stay in a profession you aren’t good at?

Your career is a game, too, after all. You might as well choose a game you can win at. Why would you do anything else?

Capitalism is a game. That’s all there is to it. Those who stay aware of that perspective have fewer ulcers than those who don’t. Their blood pressure stays lower, too.

And most important of all … when you know you’re playing a game, you’re more likely to win it.
