They may be managers, but they do not manage …– Tired of incompetent managers Dear Fatigued …Certainly, no just about it, there are many IT managers in place today who have no clue on the how’s, why’s, what’s, and all the rest of what it takes to be a good manager.As they say in baseball, tough bounce. Complaining about this doesn’t help Reorg’d figure out what he needs to do right now, or what he needs to do differently to succeed next time round. IT managers, and IT staff, work in a world of real human beings. None are perfect, none are robots programmed to always respond in exactly the desired way. Each has personal goals and aspirations which contribute to their decisions just as much as advancing the company strategy and helping those who report to them succeed. Many work in positions for which they aren’t fully qualified — as they should: It means they aren’t just coasting. Others work in positions for which they never will be qualified, but aren’t willing to relinquish because doing so would mean loss of salary, embarrassment, and the need to acknowledge to themselves that they aren’t cut out for the job.That’s the nature of people. The alternative is trying to find employment in companies run by another species.Is my advice “standard management school” stuff?” Beats me. I never learned standard management school stuff. I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way, what works and what doesn’t in real businesses.
