A few weeks back at LinuxWorld I ran into some folks I know from Linux Format magazine in the UK. In my view, Linux Format is one of the best publications on open source in the known universe. It’s part of the Future Media which publishes everything from mainstream PC hobbyist magazines to the leading guitar magazines. What I think makes the magazines so successful is that the people who work on the magazines are truly passionate about the topic and it comes through in the writing.

Even though I’m not really a hands-on Linux guy, I still find Linux Format worth reading. Here’s a few of the stories from the September issue:

-News and analysis on Microsoft’s work with Linux vendors

-Reviews of Fedora 7, Nero Linux 3 and the Defcon game

-Roundup of Linux audio players

-Book reviews on Ruby, SUSE, Linux Sys Administration

-News on six different distro updates

-How-to guide on re-installing Linux

-Interview with a lead developer on Gimp’s GEGL engine

-Article on open source in developing countries

-a Q&A on ZFS file system

-Tutorials on Bash, Vim, and Evolution calendering

And that’s only the half of it! Pretty much every issue has something worth saving. The August issue had detailed coverage of GPL3. The April issue had an in depth comparison of version control systems that would save anyone days of time in comparing different systems.

The subscription price to the US is £90 though they sometimes have special promotional prices. It’s a bargain at twice the price. Go ahead, subscribe already.
