Tim O'Reilly talks about the value of data and lock-in

I managed to capture some video as well as photos at the OSCON keynotes last week. Tim O’Reilly, as usual, did a great job in his keynote. Although it was short, Tim manages to articulate with striking precision the significance of emerging trends, like the paradigm shift due to open source whereby data is a new source of value and lock-in. Tim does a great job of pointing out issues that developers and entrepreneurs need to pay attention to.

Note that there are multiple video clips in the playlist, including a brief pitch by Dirk Hohndel on Intel’s Moblin initiative. And for those looking for some comic relief, Damien Conway gave a funny presentation entitled “Temporarily Quaquaversal Virtual Nanomachine Programming in Multiple Topologically Connected Quantum-Relativistic Parallel Timespaces…..Made Easy!”

For those curious how I managed to get both video and photos during a single presentation, I actually used two different devices. For photos I used my trusty Canon G9 and for video I used something called the Flip Video, which is a cheap, no frills video recorder. The Canon produces vastly superior images and video (especially at live concerts), but I wanted to be able to do both at the same time. A bit geeky, but you only need one hand for each device. (Though a gripping hand would come in handy now and then.)
