With the huge push behind their VMware Infrastructure 3 product, who would have thought that VMware still had time to worry about its legacy server class virtualization product, VMware ESX Server 2.x?

The company has announced yet another dot release, VMware ESX Server 2.5.4, Build 32233. One of the main reasons for this update is to add support for newer hardware and servers that weren’t compatible with the previous ESX Server release. The new server and hardware update is because of the hardware refresh that is going on right now in the industry with new chipsets, processors and SAS drives and controller cards. While these hardware incompatibilities were addressed for the most part within VI3, there is still a huge base of implementations running ESX Server 2.x that have not had a chance to migrate to the newer platform for one reason or another. The new 2.5.4 dot release will breathe enough life into the 2.x product to keep it running on some of the latest hardware being released.

So what’s new within this 2.5.4 release?
