Is the iPhone platform outpacing Windows Mobile?

In recent news, Apple has announced that there are now more than 1,000 applications available for the iPhone and that there have been 25 million application downloads. These are not necessarily heavy-duty enterprise apps (though there are a few), many are games or utilities that don’t necessarily have significant value to IT organizations. Also 20% of the apps are freebies and 90% are priced under $10. So it’s not necessarily indicative of a huge market yet.

But the volume and speed at which developers are creating these apps and users are downloading them is the most important item. Given the proliferation of iPhones in many organizations and the ease of adding applications, this could be a viable Enterprise platform faster than many people are expecting. The iPhone may not have more applications in absolute numbers than Windows Mobile at this point, but it’s sure as heck growing faster. And that’s worth paying attention to.

If you’re adding mobile to your list of supported platforms for your company, let me know your thinking behind it.
