What do Microsoft and Jerry Seinfeld have in common? It’s no secret that Microsoft retained the ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky to try to make the company cool. After all, Bogusky did great work with the whole Subserviant Chicken thing. Heck, if it worked for Burger King why not Microsoft? Microsoft’s been taking it on the chin for the last couple of years thanks to Apple’s creative “Mac vs PC” campaign. Apple has been fanning the flames of Vista disapointment in a series of very funny commercials. So I was a little puzzled by the first Microsoft ad to come out. It features Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld shopping at a discount store called Shoe Circus. What’s it about? Well, nothing. I’m not saying it’s not funny, but it doesn’t say anything about what Microsoft is doing or why anyone should care. (For the cynical, here’s an alternate ending version that’s slightly funnier.)For the $300 million that Microsoft is spending on these ads, I hope the ads won’t all be about nothing. Open Source
