Microsoft achieved Olympian feats in Beijing this year -- but not exactly what they intended. Cringely has more. So the Chinese faked the fireworks and the child singers at the Beijing Olympics’ opening ceremonies, but they didn’t need to fake the Windows crashes. During the ceremonies a wall of the stadium apparently displayed an XP Blue Screen of Death ten stories high as Chinese gymnast Li Ning raced across it carrying the Olympic torch. A quick-fingered blogger captured the image here (and in a nice ironic touch, posted it on MSN Spaces). Gizmodo has an even better picture of it.According to the Rivercool blog, the screen was on display for about two hours. But hey, only about 2.3 billion people watched the ceremonies, so I’m sure hardly anyone noticed. Taking the gold medal in the Decathalon of Futility, it’s Microsoft Windows! In this category they’re more dominating than Michael Phelps. Got hot tips or more Olympian style gaffes? Post them below or email me at cringe (at) infoworld (dot) com.
