Kindle 2.0 in October?

Will Amazon make the Kindle more open?

I love books. If I have an addiction, it’s buying books. (There are worse things, I’m sure.) So I’ve been intrigued by the Kindle from Amazon. The Kindle was developed by guys working in the secret Lab 126 operation in our building in Cupertino just one floor above our offices. I have mixed felings about carrying around yet-another single purpose digital device, but maybe if they add a decent browsing experience, it would be worth it. Plus Matt Asay thinks its cool, and he’s a pretty sharp guy.

But I usually think it’s best to way until the 2.0 version before diving into things. But there may be some good news coming. CrunchGear reports that Amazon insiders let slip there is a Kindle 2.0 coming in October in time for the Christmas shopping season. Details are pretty light, but it could have an improved user interface and a smaller form factor. Lets hope they also make it easier to read PDF documents and plain text files. And more general purpose support for reading blogs; not just the top 300, but any blog I happen to be interested in.

Matt, maybe we can both get the new one and you can stop mourning the loss of your Kindle 1.0?

Ars Technica has some suggestions for Amazon on how to make the Kindle more mainstream, ranging from usability improvements to lower price. What do others think? Any Kindle fanboys out there want to respond?
