This is an especially difficult concept when you consider that most American businesses operate quarter to quarter, and budgets and objects change monthly. Thus, longer term projects such as SOA, which are both complex and systemic, are difficult if not impossible to maintain over time in some organizations. What’s needed is a much longer term outlook.

The best advice is to get investment and commitment from the top of the organization, have the political clout to protect the projects, and understand the longer term value and importance to the enterprise. Anything less will result in failure, as many IT shops continue to seek the quick fix, perhaps layering even more complexity into the enterprise. Indeed, without a long term commitment around SOA within the organization, implementing even the simplest of SOA projects will have a low-to-no-chance of success.
