Yang's departure opens the door for improved execution. Any takers?

Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder, is resigning from his position as CEO. While Yang can be credited with some of Yahoo’s improvements during his tenure, he also gets the blame for mis-handling Microsoft’s acquisition offer and failing to close a strategic deal with Google.

If the company is to remain independent they will need to bring in a more operationally focused CEO who can be objective about cutting their losses in money-losing businesses and focusing their product strategy on where they can win. This is the first step towards improving the situation.

Update:

Since there’s a lot of speculation about who should take the CEO position at Yahoo, why don’t we open up the discussion in the comments. Give me your nominations as to who you think could do this job…
