Microsoft’s SP2 gets cold shoulder from businesses

The news that companies are taking their time before installing Microsoft’s Service Pack 2 on Windows XP PCs took some people by surprise. According to a recent survey, slightly less than a quarter currently have upgraded.

I’m not really surprised. When Microsoft’s Service Pack 2 first appeared in August I began receiving calls from individual PC users wondering why their systems not working properly after installing the upgrade. Dell even put up a special section on their website devoted to users who had a difficult time with Service Pack 2 issues. I spoke with Microsoft, along with several software companies that were affected by Service Pack, and they all said any issues were being worked out.

This survey indicates that may not be the case, at least to the satisfaction of corporate users. The update makes significant changes to Windows, primarily to increase security on the system. But it often renders existing applications inoperable, so many companies have held off on installing the update.
