Personal favorite blogs and podcasts

A selection of blogs and podcasts that I read and listen to on open source, technology, music, and running.

And finally, as we conclude the year, here’s my personal list of blogs and podcasts that I recommend. They aren’t all tech, but I hope you will find them interesting:

Cnet’s Open Road

I have Matt Asay to blame for my role as a blogger over at InfoWorld. But he’s in a league of his own when it comes to blogging about open source and the tech industry in general. I honestly don’t know how he manages to post so much. My suspicion is that he actually farms out the work to his kids. Matt is always worth reading even if I sometimes take him to task. Also good: Dave Rosenberg’s Negative Approach. But the title is just, so, ah, negative.

Guy Kawasaki’s blog

I think Guy Kawasaki’s is one of the best business and tech writers out there. He’s informative, entertaining, and no Bull Shitake. His How to Change the World blog is a great resource. His book “Reality Check” is a great compendium of articles and blogs for entrepreneurs. My only wish is that Guy would spend more time writing longer pieces rather than 140 character tweets.

Engadget

If Bill Gates has time to read Engadget, then you should too. I make a point of reading Engadget whenever I’m in the market for new electronic gear, whether it’s a smartphone, camera, or PC. There’s also a podcast, but the blog is better.

GuitarFlame

In my spare time I write about guitars and music over at GuitarVibe. GuitarFlame is written by a guitar player in Romania named Ovidiu. If you’re into music, especially guitar, this is worth checking out.

This American Life

My wife turned me onto this NPR show, and my morning commute has never been better. I listen to it via the weekly podcast on their Web site or on iTunes. Like many NPR stories, this is filled with “driveway moments” where you just can’t get out of the car until the story reaches its conclusion.

TWIT

I don’t listen to every podcast of Leo Laporte’s This Week in Tech (TWIT), but when I do, I always find something interesting. There’s also a related podcast FLOSS Weekly that covers open source. Early episodes of FLOSS Weekly weren’t that good, but the show has improved.

Sound Opinions

Another public radio show available on podcast, Sound Opinions covers the spectrum or rock and pop music with interviews, reviews, and news by two Chicago-area rock critics. Featured bands and musicians include the likes of Radiohead, Alejandro Escovedo, Don Felder, She & Him, Calexico, Spoon, and Ray Davies. Heck, I even donated money to the show. Where else are you gonna hear new music?

Phedippidations

This is a great podcast on running by a slightly asthmatic middle-of-the-pack runner in New England named Steve Runner. There are shows about training tips, gear, and legendary runners, as well as race reports from mere mortals. Better than the average morning DJ and very motivational.

I hope there were at least a couple of new things in this list for folks to check out. What are your top podcats and blogs? Let me know!
