CIOL reports that Big Blue plans to double its datacenter capacity to 12 million square feet without increasing wattage. CIOL (CyberMedia India Online) has an interesting nugget about IBM’s Big Green datacenter initiative: As part of Big Blue’s $1 billion-a-year service initiative to build and redesign its datacenters to consume less energy, the company plans to double its datacenter capacity from 6 million square feet to 12 million square feet over the next three years — without increasing wattage.“There are two ways we will be attaining energy efficiency: One is to reduce the power usage in the existing facilities and also put in energy-efficient systems in the new ones. We are aiming to double the datacenter capacity that will consume as much energy, which is used today. Thus there will be no addition in wattage used, but 40 to 50 percent of power will be saved,” IBM Vice President of Global Site and Facilities, Global Technology Services Steven Sams told CIOL.
