Downloadable ring tones only the beginning

While the likes of Napster and others offer downloadable ring tone service, there are a lot more interesting services expected this year as U.S. carriers will finally move to deploy Macromedia Flash on handsets.

I spoke with Anup Muraka, director of marketing for mobile and devices for Macromedia and Gil Sideman, CTO at Oddcast, a mobile ISV earlier in the day.

The biggest news to come out of the meeting came from Muraka. While Muraka cannot speak for the carriers, he did say he believes Flash will be available on handsets by the end of the year.

Of course, carriers in Japan, the rest of Asia and in Europe have deployed Flash-enabled devices for some time. It has been available since May 03, but when it comes to handsets and wireless services, the U.S. seems to always bring up the rear.

Flash will allow a far richer user interface on the handsets that companies like Oddcast are already taking advantage of.

Look for Oddcast’s talking avatar, called the InfoAgent, to tell you the weather, sports results, news, horoscope and probably the nearest pizzeria.

Sideman said Oddcast is also developing the technology to create a teaching avatar for learning languages, among other things.

Unfortunately, Oddcast will also sell its technology to advertisers so just in case you thought you could escape from somebody selling you something, give up.

What is probably more interesting is the idea of corporate Web designers who already know Flash using that expertise to extend enterprise applications down to the cell phone.

So just in case you thought you could escape from the boss, give up.
