Will open source adoption accelerate? Seems like a no-brainer to me

Wednesday morning, I’ll be speaking on a panel at the Accel Symposium over at Stanford. They’ve been running this event for 15 years, and it caters to a mix of Stanford faculty and students, as well as investors, entrepreneurs, and tech execs.

The panel I’m on is “Will the Recession Strengthen Open Source or Destroy Profitability?” Maybe the answer is “all of the above.”

We’re seeing an accelerated shift toward cost-saving technologies, including open source, cloud computing, and software as a service. I think increasingly CIOs are looking at open source as part of a “dual strategy” whereby they will continue to use proprietary software for legacy applications but choose open source for new rapidly growing applications. When IT budgets are being cut and projects aren’t, there are few ways to solve the equation, and open source can certainly reduce the traditional license/maintenance expense.

The panel includes Rob Beardon from SpringSource, Scott Dietzen from Yahoo (previously Zimbra), John Newton from Alfresco, and me. It will be moderated by Kevin Efrusy from Accel. Should be fun.

And then next week, I’ll be at the Olliance Open Source Think Tank for a couple of days.
