·       1970: Norm Abramson’s ALOHAnet, the first packet radio network, is operational at the University of Hawaii.

·       1973: Robert Metcalfe, later founder of 3Com, invents Ethernet at Xerox PARC.

·       1977: U.S. patent no. 4063220 is issued for Ethernet.

·       1979: Networking giant 3Com is founded, and later merges with U.S. Robotics.

·       1982: DIX releases 10Mbps Ethernet standard. 3Com releases its first product, EtherLink, a NIC.

·       1992: 3Com releases first stackable Ethernet hub.

·       2002: IEEE approves 802.3ae; data speeds as fast as 10 billion bps. Intel ships first XPAK multimode optical transceiver
