NetIQ Expands Cross-Platform Management Capabilities

AppManager is NetIQ’s cross-platform infrastructure management solution for Linux, Unix, and Windows systems, as well as a variety of J2EE application servers, Web servers, and databases. AppManager focuses on systems management from a service-level perspective, offering monitoring and measurement for compliance with SLAs. Version 6.0 adds support for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS and ES, as well as VoIP systems from Cisco and Nortel. Authentication and access control security have been improved, and the package now includes more predefined management scripts for easier setup and configuration. In addition, the new release is scalable to twice the number of servers as before. Pricing is per managed application and starts at $600.

Open Source BPEL

ActiveBPEL, a new organization founded by SOA (service-oriented architecture) integration vendor Active Endpoints, aims to stimulate industry interest in BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) with the release of the ActiveBPEL Engine. Available free of charge, the open source project implements the full BPEL 1.1 spec, including event handling, exception handling, and scope/compensation management. The engine is written in Java and runs inside an Apache Tomcat 5.x application server container.

Hardcore Load Balancing

Coyote Point has announced availability of its new Equalizer Extreme layer 4 through layer 7 load-balancing solution, capable of managing traffic for most Internet protocols using a variety of algorithms. Based on Dell PowerEdge 1750 Xeon-based rack servers, the product supports Gigabit Ethernet and as many as 12 million concurrent connections with full system redundancy, including hot-swappable power supplies. Secure remote management is available via either a Web-based or command-line interface. Equalizer Extreme costs $9,995.

Cross-Distribution Linux Management

OC-Manager 2.0 is a new Linux system management solution from Open Country designed to help administrators provision and maintain as many as 5,000 individual Linux servers or desktops. Its Web-based interface allows mixing and matching of various Linux distributions, and it integrates with existing package-based software distribution systems. Asset discovery, backup and restore, and remote desktop takeover capabilities are also included. Subscription pricing starts at $9 per system per month.
