SOA: Focus on fundamentals

David Linthicum is at it again. While the rest of us were relaxing over the weekend, he was busy contemplating his observation that people charged with building SOAs presently are setting methodologies, defining deliverables and determining how artifacts are related — rather than looking for enabling SOA technology.

“What’s more, they are focusing on education, and understanding just what they are doing before they do it,” Linthicum writes. “We have learned from the past that quick movements towards a technology trend without the proper amount of upfront thinking typically results in failure.”

Bearing that in mind, Linthicum looks at the five aspects many IT shops are working on in relation to SOA.

“If you ask me, this is a good trend. Whether it’s the attraction of SOA as the hot new technology, or perhaps the reinvention of existing technology, most enterprise architects view SOA as a key strategic initiative, and are not willing to risk failure.”
