Planned adoptions of Windows Vista have fallen significantly in the last year, according to a new survey, likely because of compatibility issues, costs of buying new and beefier hardware, and the drumbeat of negative publicity.

But there was one surprise in the study: security was listed, by respondents, as a reason they liked Vista, Bill Snyder reports in Businesses saying a stronger no to Vista.

“Microsoft, of course, is well aware of the image problem but is still proceeding with its plan to begin the phaseout of XP at the end of the month.”

Meanwhile, hardware makers plan to sell XP down to the wire — save Dell, which says its cutoff date will be June 18.
