MySQL ships version 5.0, calls it biggest release to date

Databases: MySQL ships a major upgrade to its open source database. MySQL 5.0, which the company claims is the most important release ever, adds triggers, views and stored procedures, features typically found in rival’s proprietary databases.

The news beat: SAP updates its Business One software for small customers by adding a customizable interface and more intuitive features, Aruba unveils portable access points for VoIP, desktop virtualization startup Propero thinks big as it releases version 5.0 of its software, and Ericsson sets up a center for R&D in India.

Best of the blogs: Jon Udell posts what he calls “a movie with screencasting elements” in his blog. The topic: Keene’s annual pumpkin festival. This screencast shows what can be done on a Mac with Ambrosia Software’s Snapz Pro X, and iMovie HD, which Jon used for the video editing.

From the feature well: In all the commotion caused by its current rivalry with AMD, it’s easy to forget that throughout the last few decades Intel and its x86 architecture were poised, in the minds of some, to lose out to the RISC-based architectures from the likes of IBM, Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems. But now the x86 rules both the desktop and server kingdoms and it appears that RISC is the one in danger of fading away, or at least being relegated to a niche. Is Intel victorious?
