Best of the blogs: Matt Asay takes a deep dive into the soul of a Forrester Research report on where open source is booming, and determines that for most of the people who try out open source there’s no going back. But, then again, some folks do buy open source on a false premise. “Open source is not a price tag,” Asay contends. “It’s much more than that.” Indeed, Asay correlates the growing use of open source to the growing areas of enterprise spending from a different Forrester report and believes “there is a massive open source software market waiting to happen.”

Columnists’ Corner: The bold Roger Grimes sticks up for Microsoft’s security efforts in the face of the Linux, Apache and Firefox devout — not that he is a Microsoft zealot but, instead, because malicious code pre-dates the company and “real security solutions aren’t as easy as replacing Windows.”

The news beat: Microsoft settled another lawsuit, this time with Daum Communications. The Redmond giant paid $30 million to end antitrust charges and, while it won’t cease an investigation by Korea’s Fair Trade Commission, the move does bring Microsoft a step closer to solving its legal problems in South Korea. Accton Technology is planning Skype-compatible products, Via puts Padlock on Java apps with a free software add-on, and the FTC cracks down on an alleged spyware site. The FTC is charging the site with distributing spyware and adware under the guise of free music, ringtones, photos and song lyrics.
