A consortium of five companies has formed the Enterprise Desktop Alliance (EDA) to promote deployment of Macs in the enterprise. A recent survey from the Yankee Group found that eight in 10 business people now use a Mac in the office, double the number from 2006, so the EDA’s goal of making IT departments aware of enterprise tools for integrating the Mac with Windows and PC-based network infrastructure could be a timely one.Bill Gates, in an interview with Tom Brokaw on last day of full-time work at Microsoft, indicated that renewed talks about a merger with Yahoo, if they existed, are now over. An independent tester says Mozilla’s Firefox 3.0 browser uses memory much more efficiently than rivals IE, Opera, Flock, and Safari on Windows. Firefox 3.0 was the clear winner, not only because it used the least amount of memory but its memory use didn’t noticeably grow over time. Poorest marks went to Apple’s Safari 3 .1 for Windows, which consistently consumed more memory the longer it was used. A business version of Micro-Star International’s (MSI) Wind mini-desktop PC is in the works. The Wind mini-desktop is designed with parts from mini-laptops, including the 1.6GHz Intel Atom microprocessor, and will offer businesses low power consumption and quiet running since they require no fan for cooling.
