As much as half of all spam in the past year has been bugged with “spam beacons” or “Web bugs,” which are created with HTML code embedded in the e-mail. The e-mail may be an image file stored on a spammer’s server. When the message is opened, the e-mail application requests the image and also sends along an encoded e-mail address of the recipient.
