Developers can build apps with payment capabilities for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices Appcelerator and PayPal are building a development toolset described by Appcelerator as the first-ever mobile commerce development platform, the companies announced Tuesday.Appcelerator, which provides development tools to build mobile applications, will offer a mobile commerce solution, called Titanium+Commerce, through PayPal’s merchant channel. The partnership at the outset pairs the Titanium development platform for mobile applications with the PayPal Mobile Payment Library, also known as the PayPal button.“We will be offering it to Titanium developers who want to add payment functionality,” into their applications, said Appcelerator marketing vice president Scott Schwarzhoff. Titanium+Commerce is available in a beta release as of today, with general availability planned for the first half of next year. For the general release, PayPal and Appcelerator will add capabilities for rewards programs, shopping, and social commerce, Schwarzhoff said. Social commerce involves the sharing of deals, he said.Merchants and online businesses can extend into mobile commerce by enabling purchase of real and virtual goods, services, and content from smartphones, tablets, and other devices, Appcelerator said.Titanium supports development of applications for Apple iOS, RiM BlackBerry, and Google Android, using Web development skills.
