Hyperic 4.4 lets IT admins track performance problems across physical, virtual, and private cloud infrastructures EMC VMware today is introducing a SpringSource-branded version of its Hyperic application management software, Hyperic 4.4, which features enhanced integration with the VMware vCenter platform for infrastructure management. The integration surfaces vCenter information into Hyperic, enabling Hyperic to maintain an inventory of information on VMware vSphere virtualization hosts. Information can be surfaced, such as which virtual machine is running the database.Through this integration, IT administrators can more rapidly pinpoint and prevent application performance problems across physical, virtual, and private cloud infrastructures, VMware said. Hyperic focuses on monitoring and managing custom applications, whether they are deployed on physical or virtual hardware, said David McJannet, director of product marketing for the SpringSource division of VMware. “Hyperic allows the operator to see their app,” McJannet said. Meanwhile vCenter gauges infrastructure parameters such as network and storage availability, he said.Hyperic provides in-depth real-time performance data on more than 75 technologies used to develop Web applications, enabling users to ensure applications meet service-level commitments through reduced application downtown and improved performance, according to VMware.VMware announced its acquisition of SpringSource in August 2009, a few months after SpringSource had acquired Hyperic. Hyperic 4.4 also features virtualization-aware alerting, in which it can distinguish between a guest operating system that has shut down unintentionally and one that has powered down intentionally. This prevents false alarms and enables administrators to scale application infrastructure without triggering alerts, VMware said.Other features of version 4.4 include: Application migration assurance, for quantifying virtualization’s impact on application performance Automated problem resolution Virtualized environment event and log monitoring This article, “VMware links Hyperic, vCenter for app monitoring,” was originally published at InfoWorld.com.
