These days I can hardly recognize it. Ever since OS X 10.5 "Leopard" was released it's like I'm looking at an entirely new computer. Things just seem to work better now, and each newly discovered feature sends a visceral chill up and down my spine. Dare I say it? My PC is actually "cool" again! Some observations: 1. Ever since OS X 10.5 “Leopard” was released it’s like I’m looking at an entirely new computer. Things just seem to work better now, and each newly discovered feature sends a visceral chill up and down my spine. Dare I say it? My PC is actually “cool” again! Some observations:1. The user interface is simply gorgeous. I can’t get over how visually attractive this OS has become. The drop shadows. The intelligent use of Translucency. The sheer consistency of the look and feel. Someone was paying attention when they crafted this baby. It’s a work of art! 2. The new desktop environment is a wonder. I love how I can organize all my icons into neat little groups and even Preview the contents of my data files without opening the authoring application. And those Thumbnails! What a time saver! I’ve never been more productive.3. On a more practical note, I know that my data is safer thanks to the robust backup features. Lost a file? Need to go back to a Previous Version? Salvation is just a few mouse clicks away. It really is like a “Time Machine” for your workspace.4. Integrated search is a godsend. When it comes to data, I’m a bit of a packrat. However, I’m also the type who creates complex, nested folder structures to organize my files. Still, even I lose things once in a while, and the ability to quickly and efficiently find that lost word document, PDF file or email message is a real bonus. I can even use the search mechanism to locate and Start my applications. How cool is that! Overall, I’m just blown away by my OS of choice. It seems like the more I use it, the more I come to appreciate how truly revolutionary it is. And when you consider that I’ve been working with the RTM bits of said OS for *over a year* now, that’s really saying something! But enough about Windows Vista – it’s time to load up that OS X 10.5 DVD and take Apple’s latest and greatest for a spin. I hear this new version really rocks, with all sorts of “cool” features that the industry has never seen before. I can’t wait!Question of the Week: Which Linux distribution stacks up best against OS X 10.5? I’m leaning towards Ubuntu, however, the SUSE 10.x builds look quite compelling. Thoughts?
