Thanks to the folks over at the exo.performance.network, we now have proof of a compelling reason to upgrade our systems with Service Pack 1: A roughly 3% improvement in application performance.

Of course, the particular “Service Pack 1” in question is for Microsoft Office 2007. With all the hoopla surrounding Vista SP1, it was easy to miss the announcement about Office 2007 SP1. Yet here it is, and in addition to the usual bug fixes and compatibility tweaks, it’s also delivering a modest performance kick.

It looks like the Office team has got their act together when it comes to tuning their code paths. Too bad it’s not enough to overcome the massive code bloat that has plagued both Vista and Office 2007 since they debuted over a year ago. If ever there was a code base in need of a diet! Still, it could be worse – they might have rewritten the entire suite as managed code! (:gasp!)

Overall, good news for Office fans. Maybe these Office developer folks can loan a few people to the Vista team. They could use the help…
